Data
Response ID# Value
2360806 Improvements: Calendaring integration with corporate functions (free/busy scheduling etc.)
2360812 Better layout versions. Group mails by relevance (date, groups, stc). Some good features from other mail applications. Eg.: Slideshow like Mail.app (OS-X), Instant messaging like Gmail.
2360821 Thunderbird could use more PIM features like built-in calendar and task lists.
2360937 Very Disappointed in the way Mozilla is treating Thunderbird and it's users
2360888 bugs# 254739 266891 386219 386952 393380 393967
2360922 Wishlist: 1. more useful tagging (make it easier to add, view, handle tags; make untagging undoable) 2. slicker user interface (make actions more contextual, less toolbar buttons, switch off statusbar) 3. add a progress dialog à la Outlook Express (making it easier to track download progress over several accounts) To increase the number of users: 2. and 3. might help, as might better webmail integration (support Hotmail, Yahoo!, GMX, etc. out of the box). In general: make common tasks possible with less clicks and less searching.
2360935 Calendaring support: I would appreciate a more integrated calendaring / appointments system than currently provided by Lightning. PDA synchronisation is high on my list, it would be really nice to enable import/export functions with my Palm V for contact info and appointments
2360969 - Encryption of mail storage would be nice too in an entreprise environment. - Easy creation of Deployment pack including extensions and their settings, for one-click installation of a preconfigured TB+extensions.
2361065 The program needs new interface. It should include Lightning by default. An idea to implement tabs is very good. But it should look more like yahoo mail. Also adding a chat possibility is a good idea
2361128 Full Jabber/XMPP integration, which means not only instant messaging and basic presence, but also Multi-User Chat, transports, privacy lists, extended presence, Publish-Subscribe mechanism, remote (ad-hoc) commands, zeroconf, vCard, etc. ...and NO proprietary IM support, e.g. AIM, ICQ, WLM/MSN, Yahoo, QQ, Gadu-Gadu, Xfire, MySpaceIM, etc.
2361183 much better adressbook features. They are really inadequate. Fields for birthday (which are linked in calendar), picture of person, more adress fields. More Plugins
2361166 Replicating the functionality of outlook + exchange should be a high priority. This will involve some kind of server, as well as calendaring (especially the functionality of a secretary being able to view/modify their bosses calendar).
2361192 Easier installation of extensions a la Firefox.
2361190 Apple's Mail.app is the ideal email client. Problem is, I use Windows. Look at Mail.app, figure out what it does correctly and incorrectly, and use that as a basis for a new Thunderbird. Color-coded calendar support, please.
2361278 1. Roaming profile! 2. Request feature of Mail Re-direction be build-in.
2361243 If the most voted for bugs in Bugzilla were fixed, Thunderbird would be a much better mail app!
2361324 Thunderbird should really implement full groupware support in order to be a real alternative for MS Outlook users.
2361371 Ability to synchronise with mobile phones; simplify the UI
2361386 Thunderbird must to be faster. And, please, let's think about uncluttering email features. Let's start a really big forum about that. It's so important nowadays.
2361491 I would like to see thunderbird using less memory and CPU. I tends to really slow my computer down every now and then.
2361495 calender support via lightning is still not perfect, it would be nice to have some kind of date recognition in e-mails that could be inserted in the lightning. otherwise tb is a great app. thanks for keeping us updated with the changes and bug fixes!
2361505 Develop new USEFUL features. There are a lot of "web programs" (webmail, google calendar, social sites, instant messengers), try to keep up with them. I does not mean, that you should integrate/assimilate them, but cooperate with them!
2361481 Integrate lightning Add support to i ntegrate with exchange Add better way to manage mail (ie mail arrive, handle tagging/todo list/priority or link emails or todo to a event (like I have to answer this email at least one hour before this event)... Add synchronisation to mobile better communication to community better doc easing installation of thunderbird extension (from firefox)
2361594 Provide better integration with Linux. Especially the KDE desktop.
2361596 Mobile device synchronization (including address book and calendar) is fundamental. Otherwise it is hard to use thunderbird as a replacement of outlook when you use mobile devices.
2361654 Most annoying: blocking UI on some actions, e.g. checking newsgroups after expanding newsgroup-item in folder pane.
2361581 Improve address book management, maybe using tags to group users (like in Palm PDAs or the next firefox/epiphany bookmarks) and with more powerful export/import capabilities. All in all, I'd like to love thunderbird as a contact management tool, as I usually look for phone numbers there, email addresses... and, why not birthdays and so?
2361701 Be a better IMAP client. Do you really always need to download all headers for all folders? PINE doesn't.
2361655 Please take a look at the thunderbird adressbook. Lists behave very strange. Some times drag'n'drop does not work or entries disappear from lists. Simply folder support in the adressbook would be very nice too. And it definitely needs variable/user-defined fields.
2361773 The ability to redirect mail would be nice (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12916). Search could be improved. I'd like the ability to quickly search entire messages from any folder. By entire message I mean the full message source. The interface could do being simpler and more intuitive. A lot of menus have too many items and the whole interface is just not as well organised as Firefox's.
2362051 Make scam filter trainable, remember OK senders in a whitelist
2362094 I'd like to see a tabbed user interface, improvements to spam filtering, better news-group support (don't show cross-posted messages that have already been read, show new groups on refresh of list of groups), reduction in memory use, integration of Lightning.
2362092 default PIM, calendar, invitation, caldav XP MAPI integration addressbook Openoffice integration
2361982 - profile backup and management is really clumsy in all mozilla apps - some old bugs seem to never get fixed - there should be a standard way of installing the latest thunderbird, firefox, sunbird, etc., that are not in the repos - i'm using linux (gutsy) and think its great, but usability needs to be streamlined to convert potential new users
2362310 Missing tabbed mailing
2362394 Suggested improvement: better nested-email view, sort of what gmail does. The problem now is with emails and replies in different folders or accounts. Maybe use saved searches as a virtual folder for this may be possible?
2362400 Tango Icons Theme ?
2362511 Thunderbird will always be my number one choice for email. Since it came along at version 1 it has been my darling, next to Firefox. The spam filter is amazing, but could possibly be even better? I really like what's happening with lightning, too. If it stabilizes, it could probably be integrated to the default Thunderbird install. (For better competition against Outlook.)
2362547 PLEASE IMPROVE THE Thunderbird Addressbok
2362663 Better threaded views. Threading is still weak in T2.
2361334 Existing functionalities in Tb that need improving/fixing (in no particular order): * address book (has been neglected for far too long); * new mail notifications (annoyingly do not always fire for all accounts); * identities (correct identity is not always used with replies); * tags still have glitches (at least in IMAP); * font settings are much too confusing for newbies; * proper format=flowed behavior with CJK text; * proper formatting of quoted text in CJK messages; * strangely lacking toolbar buttons (see what's provided by the Buttons! extension).
2362718 Some suggestions: More advanced filter support, it would need to be on the same level as search folders. Dynamic front page where I would see info about received mail and if I have calendar extensions, information about calendars (or whatever extensions might have need to display some information). Exchange integration, I know the problems, but quite many organizations can't migrate to thunderbird because of exchange/outlook. Integration with instant messenger applications... I have pidgin and I want to use it, but it would be nice to have at least some level of integration (voip/video when those available, some kind of log integration, on the pidgin side auto completion of email addresses)... Integration with system address book AND outlook address book. Hardly any mobile phone synchronization program supports thunderbird. Otherwise you need much much better support for mobile devices.
2362895 * account specific notivications (s. Mail Alerts Ext.) * better mail storage system
2362960 Very important for me automatic filtering in outgoing.
2363049 Search in all addressbooks. For now, you can only search in one at a time. Allow customizing date format Fix headers displsy (long-open bug in bugzilla)
2363008 Thunderbird is very buggy (e.g. compared to Firefox), and non-critical bugs usually stay unfixed.
2362770 Improve IMAP handling, especially working offline and synchronizing. Make it work like Outlook Express - allow to delete and move messagess between folders while offline, than fully synchronize with the mail account while online. Assure that ALL message bodies are downloaded to the user's computer. Make full synchronization availble automatically on startup.
2363122 remove square brackets for forwards!
2363257 Improve followup and general business features... Add a "Create rule" on messages... etc.
2363229 Add Eudora like tabs
2363251 For enterprise use: a decent windows-installer (msi-based, transformable), an easier way of changing all users default profile location (a value set in Thunderbird/js, not profiles.ini). Ability to patch with patching standards (for windows, msp). In these times: predictability And maybe a way for bug-voting were one can say: I vote for this bug, and I am not one, but a company with 60k users...
2363247 bug fixing ;-)
2362992 Address book should have full RFC2426 vCard support : https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29106 (something like MoreFunctionsForAddressBook add-on http://nic-nac-project.de/~kaosmos/morecols-en.html ) Import-Export (messages, address book, accounts) for more programs, like Apple Mail
2363314 What Thunderbird needs is a better core architecture. Switch to mozStorage for storing emails instead of the plain text mbox format. Also use mozStorage to store Address Book entries instead of the old mork format. It's ridiculous that Thunderbird is so many years old but still lacks so many basic features like the ability to store dates in the Address Book. A better architecture and code base would make it easier to add more features in. Thunderbird also desperately needs an actual automated test framework; maybe some tests could be copied from Evolution or KMail. And finally, if Thunderbird could become a general communications management program (as in email, IM, etc.), that would be a killer feature, but it's not as important as the other two.
2363619 improve UI enhance concept of saved searches speed up UI
2363599 I think one key feature missing for entreprise usage is message templates. Message templates are also used A LOT by average users, customizing the look and feel through fonts, background, hbars, animated gifs and so on. There are corporate suppliers of templates and that could be an interesting and simple revenue stream for TB. One ***major*** entreprise feature is the ability to archive emails to secure them. This implies a server side but most of the work could be done on client's side.
2363607 Re-organizing/consolidating the user interface is very much needed, especially between Options and Account Settings. Tagging e-mails should allow you to append your own Tags on the fly.
2363672 I have 3 IMAP accounts currently, and getting Filters/Saved searches working across all three of them is a pain to me. I'd like to see them use some form of unifed mailbox where I could create saved searches/filters against everything, manage junk controls across everything, and have folder structures that would maintain themselves at some level on the different servers too. I also find writing extensions in TB painful to say the least. I wish things were simpler. Things in the UI should be easy to find using normal DOM methods. Databases should be easy to work with using normal database stuff. Maybe that's all there, but finding it has been hard.
2363196 Features - Address book; Place to put photos off the contacts; Anniversary day. And allow to be alert in the day. Sync with address books from another services, like Gmail. There is already an app that allows something like this, it's GCal (http://gcaldaemon.sourceforge.net/index.html). Maybe MailCo, can work actively with the teams of this project; - Add-ons; Lightning Some support from the new company, to this add-on, can bring in my opinion, a greater audience to Thunderbird. That for now use products like Microsoft Outlook. Also because Sun, and through of the OpenOffice.org, is contributing to the project. Expanding the user base of this applications, and providing valuable resources for developing capabilities for Thunderbird. Calendar, and Task management with mail management, is probably, the second task where computers users spend most time, currently, after Internet browsing. So I think, that by empower Thunderbird with this kind of abilities, is making Thunderbird a much better app, and a must use software. I think, the Chandler project (http://chandlerproject.org/), can give you a good perspective off what I´m talking. Maybe providing some services like mail storage, calendars and tasks in a web form, through a browser, so the users can access their information, even if they have their computers near. All this will, can make Thunderbird a Email and Management tool much more desirable and bring a extra way to get income to the new company. Sync As wrote before, providing sync capabilities, to Thunderbird is, at least for me a very needed tool. Types of sync: - Mail, calendar and tasks sync between different computers e and with web tools, like Google Calendar... For example, I have a laptop that I take for every where I go, that I need to work in documents, access mail... When I get home, I prefer to work with my desktop, but I'm forced to use my laptop also, If I want to use mail, or use a webmail interface. This is a problem that a Add-on could resolve. For ideas, let me recommend you to see a tool called Conduit (http://www.conduit-project.org) that allow sync evolution mails, tasks... Sync with web services like Google Calendar, is interesting by all the reasons that I have said before, and for that people, that like me use two operating systems in his computers, and want to be able to always use Thunderbird. Backup Capability A simple way to backup our mail and profile, to a designed folder in our computer or in a server; - Templates; See Apple strategy. They provide a software like Apple Mail, and they provide beautiful templates, that allow people to in more easy way, to create to beautiful mails, and make people want to use that app. By is easy to use, and design. - Help System; - Screencasts; Seen the example of Ubuntu Screencasts that are a nice and fast way to learn to use this OS. - Do like Firefox help system; -Empower the community This is not a feature, but I think that the new company should try to empower the community as much as they can. For now I have no ideas, but for example I really like the way that Ubuntu community is managed, is code of conduct, their teams.... The way that people relation with their software, can also be motivated by the valor off his community.
2363857 Improvements to Tbird functionality: I suggest adding an Eudora-like queuing/sending queued messages option (Outbox) (Note: this is available from extensions) To increase usage: I also suggest aiming for calendar/planner and syncing support, to be able to compete with MS offerings among larger user groups.
2364198 Most of my needs in terms of functionalities are met by extensions. I figure that installing extensions for an avrage user or a beginner may be "difficult". Would be best to "kind of" browse (discover) plug-ins directly from thunderbird and have a one click install. just my 2 cents.
2364435 I think easier extension development would be great. Like documentation on how to make calls to do things. For instance hooking into filters to add a new function like printing.
2364599 Wanted features: Newsgroup: auto combine split files over multiple posts / Integrated automatic UUD decoding / auto decode yEnc and other encoded files / Mozilla fx plugin support to auto-play/display PDF or AVI files natively Mail: Send to Tray (auto-prevents pop-up notifications) / Auto-collapse threads in Thread message view Password Manager: Stop auto-removing passwords if connection fails
2364700 support maildir export/import. Thanks for thunderbird :D
2364675 Lack of Minimise to Tray as default is the one big thing stopping me from having it running all the time.
2365295 I would love to see an option to change your main interface to look more like gmail with "conversations" and labels instead of e-mails and folders. This is the one thing that keeps me using gmail instead of migrating to a local mail app again.
2365306 TB needs to ditch mbox mail format. Large file format is clumsy, slow, uses much disk space, and makes incremental backups hell. Not to mention fragging an inbox when you receive a virus. TB REALLY REALLY needs calendar. Yes, Lightning is available, but it's not there yet, and TB isn't going to acquire market share unless Lightning is integrated out of the box, most users don't even know what extensions are. TB also needs more innovation. It's not much more than a vanilla mail client. Yes, very standards compliant etc, I'm not complaining about that, but in terms of functionality it doesn't stand out from the crowd. I don't have answers there, I just know that it feels ho-hum lately.
2365564 better dic. and grammar. better support of mix language: i'm french living in germany, using the english Thunderbird version, writing english, german, french and spanish emails, of course mixing the languages in the same mail! good luck florian
2365657 I really like Thunderbird, keep up the good work. Biggest problems I have: 1. Only the Inbox refreshes automatically. My spam folder gets email automatically by the IMAP server and if I don't click on it explicitly I NEVER know they are there. 2. Only the Inbox gets automatic local copies of mail from the IMAP server. I want ALL folder to be automatically kept in sync with the IMAP server (doesn't everone?). If I forget to "Download/Sync now" before I take my notebook off the network I cannot read much of the mail in my folders. 3. I want a "From, To, or CC" or "Sender, To, or CC" choice in the search box as I keep a copy of my sent mail in my Inbox and folders and I want to be able to get entire threads through a quick search. The only way to do that now is to go into search messages and laboriously add "sender" and then "to or cc". 4. Don't worry about excessive Mac integration unless you can do it without messing up an already good product.
2362826 Shared calendaring, CalDAV, support syncing with Palm/Windows CE devices. Multiple calendars in a single view support.
2361354 Regex in rules. View filters (e.g: remove a given string from the subject in the message list). ICQ, MSN, Skype, Gtalk IM integration.
2366450 overall I am pretty happy with Thunderbird, so if you don't make it any worse that should be fine for me :-)
2366510 BETTER ENTERPRISE SUPPORT!!! Centralized settings, policy enforcing, and so on. Please help us SysAdmin!
2366680 A great feature would be to either remove the attachment pane and list the attachments in the header, or at the very least have an option to keep the pane turned off.
2366844 Thunderbird for iPhone/iPod Touch when Apple release SDK in Feb08.
2367398 I use Thunderbird exclusively because it's the best application for email for my needs. I think the best thing to do is increase the documentation allowing for Thunderbird extensions. Better documentation -> more extensions -> more functionality for different uses.
2367813 Security and stability
2367810 By "more features" I mean calendar. Don't "bloat" TB to much with VoIP, IM, etc. First, TB should be able to do what the leader in the field does (of course it will do it better)
2367722 - There is no way to quick filter (via search bar) for only star messages. - Calendar integration is a must - Ability to connect Microsoft Exchange/Notes - Maildir support - Backup solution
2367945 The underlying code is unfinished for a too large number of features. Many bugs that have been documented up to ten years ago are still open. Some of these bugs have been labelled as "critical" but no one seems to care.
2368498 More customization. Having to use about:config is not the thing for a normal user...
2368175 I'd love to see improved "conversation thread" handling as in Google Mail. Thunderbird offers a feature to display messages in hierarchical order but it doesn't feel particularly well integrated (2.0.0.6, Ubuntu Feisty). Besides that, synchronization with other client software (for contacts and calendars, too) and over multiple machines, and data transparency (mentioned in the survey) are very important points in my opinion. Especially synchronization is a huge advantage of exclusively web-based solutions that compensates the lack of offline mail availability, speed and more sophisticated sorting methods. Those are tough times for offline mail clients...
2369277 We need a new creative viewpoint. So many features are lacking due to the old thinking that it's impossible to cover them all in this survey. TB is now a decent, nice-looking, basic e-mail client. It could be much more.
2369244 - LDAP write-support. (might be on trunk within the next couple of weeks) - Add simple API for mobile companies, so they'll make official sync with messages, addresses and calendar.
2369991 - "keychain" integration on Gnome as well as OSX - "addresbook" integration with EDS and OSX addressbooks.
2370877 More features -- finish the Summer of Code Vista-search integration. I would *love* this. Persistent thread filing -- if I file an incoming message to a specific folder, replies to that message / future "conversation" threads should go that folder, as well,
2370902 addressbook improvements and full ldap support would make my day
2370605 - fix old and annoying bugs / feature requests e.g. like those on my bugzilla votes list https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/votes.cgi?action=show_user&user=firefox%40poczta.neostrada.pl
2367704 I occasionally have problems with interacting with a (buggy?) IMAP server. That's not necessarily Thunderbird's fault, but I'd appreciate greater robustness and error handling.
2372721 - improved address book !!! - improved calendar - improved HTML messages compositor - improved UI (message presentation) - improved search through messages
2372965 Spell/grammar checking - priority 1 Usable global search - priority 2 Built-in Calender/Tasks/Alerts - 3 General UI cleanup/improvements - 4 After that you can think about VoIP, Chat and else
2373060 Simplify default folder moving, put sent and receive mail in same folder with sent mail in italics (as was in Eudora) which permit a better visualization of thread
2372062 Wish list: Choose "From:" more intelligently for multiple identities Better handling of semi-throwaway individual mail addresses for singing up to web sites and similar purposes Clean up duplicate messages on demand Improve multithreading so that message writing doesn't block when a large swath of messages is received Support for mailing lists, including getting subscription infos from HTML micro formats and automated local archives Support a sort of block quotes exceeding a fixed right margin in plain text input mode for pasting source code Include PGP/GPG by default P2P exchange protocol for spam filter training data; possibly support for a central service Better maintainability for mail filters, possibly support for a central storage (LDAP, maybe) LDAP write access Less painful LDAP setup
2374978 Increase number of users => Make a simpler and more windowsish user interface that even idiots can understand. That is, remove functions. :-) improvements? I am customer support for a mailing list, and I want to be able to make a folder with template answers. I want to have a "Reply with template"-option so I don't have to copy&paste manually from a big database of answers. Thunderbird sometimes loses the folder indexes. That should never happen. Make stricter checks on folders, so that never users lose data. That's most important.
2376231 Improve SSL (both receive and send), Improve RSS, Fix anoying UI bugs
2376796 1. Include full PGP/GnuPG support in the default distribution. 2. Add the possibility to use/choose 'Maildir' instead of Mailbox.
2376450 Better control over attachment handling (preview in attachment pane, quick view, Open With > X, Y, Z submenu; integrate Find Dupe message functionality; in threaded mode, detect and collapse previous quotations; invent a mode to see follow-up responses when looking at original message; use O.S. F.S. attributes to associate files with the attachment; calendaring/address book smarts (turn e-mail into invitation); option to replace a local messages with a link to the same message in an HTML archive; option to replace an attachment with a link to the file on the Web. More on these enhancements at http://www.skierpage.com/blog/2007/10/software-e-mail-enhancements.html
2378093 I really, really like thunderbird, but it seems to have great difficulty supporting very large mailboxes (1000+ messages), despite excellent support for IMAP and other email mass storage and synchronization options. Improving the mail storage backend, with for instance maildir, would provide increased speed and performance, stability and less chance of data loss (each email is a separate file, so they have little impact on each other), better antivirus support, and would make personal backups much easier as well.
2378698 PLEASE add support for Flash to Tbird. I use Tb2 as my RSS reader and it really sucks to have to open an article in Firefox just because there's a Flash movie I want to see in the post. We also need better integration of subscribing to an RSS feed while in Firefox 2 and getting it in Thunderbird 2. This may not be as much of an issue on other platforms, but on Linux it simply doesn't work yet. There are also some feeds that stick on validating when I add them in Tb2. (I need to make sure there's a bug reported for them.)
2378808 1. Calendar to be able to sync with Google Calendar (ical?) 2. New mail notification rules (eg. no notifications for this account, or for messages from this person, or from messages with this title) 3. Ability to create filers for IMAP accounts based on some information in the message body
2379006 Improve the AddressBook so that it can be used as a general purpose addressbook.
2379789 Messages often have extra newlines, especially when dealing with long threads involving outlook users. Some well-known extension or seamlessly integrated feature would be quite useful Calendar support is a hugely important feature. Lightning is excellent, but the ability to share a calendar and view other folks' schedules among exchange users. A serverless approach would be very well received. Better user notifications - long downloads don't report their progress very well, and can't be cancelled or paused.
2379797 Keeping Thunderbird simple is more important than adding new features. I would love to see new Thunderbird releases which streamline things, and make things easier instead of adding new features. That said, I think Thunderbird does a great job in that regard anyway, especially with version 2.
2380403 IMAP support is pretty good, one of the best out there, but could still be better. I haven't used POP for about 2 years now and with Google offering IMAP as well.... Proper Tagging support! Improved threading view. Would be nice if it could easily link you sent emails/replies in. Either through being able to click on some link which opens the email you sent which is relevant to the current email. OR even nicer would be to offer a new threading view which just uses Gmail's threading view. Improved Calendar support. Would be nice if it collaborated well (just through iCal and WebDAV) with Outlook 2003 and 2007. Currently Sunbird works quite well, interface could be a little nicer. But it doesn't support handling iCal calendars created by Outlook 2007. While this is probably due to Microsoft not following the specs, I just want to be able to use both Outlook 2007 and Sunbird/Lightning on the same calendar. So some mode to specifically handle Outlook 2007 would be great. Device Sync!
2381569 Add a panel so I can see what jobs/tasks TB is working on and cancel each job. I'd like more sophisticated filtering, but the UI for that would be hard to conceive so that it's approachable for novices as well. Let me decide to always ignore SSL cert mismatches, even if it requires I use an Advanced panel or something out of the norm. Fix the editor so that no line has non-wrappable spaces. Better editing facilities to handle quoted line identification.
2381624 Thunderbird should strive to be a 'hub' for all communications if it wants to copy the success of Firefox. This means tight integration with appointment-keeping systems, calendaring systems, groupware, social networking sites, instant messaging, etc. (All with one unified, very good UI)
2381708 The user interface of windows live mail is brilliant, at least as far as arranging, ordering, and handling mail folders and employing a two-line message list. If it was stable and the imap handling were decent I would use it. I stick with TBird now b/c of stability, but would love some UI improvements
