The
Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory (NWREL) is pleased to announce
Understanding the Evidence: Examining the Impact Evaluation of the U.S. Department of Education’s Student Mentoring Program, a free one-day seminar that gathers several premier researchers in the youth mentoring field for a dialog with practitioners about this important new study.
The event is co-sponsored by the
PSU Summer Institute on Youth Mentoring and will be held on
July 27, 2009 at Portland State University (located in downtown Portland, OR). Mentoring program staff and school personnel are encouraged to attend this exploration of new research and innovative program practices in the world of school-based mentoring.
The main presenters of the day will include the following:
- Dr. Lawrence Bernstein of Abt Associates, the lead researcher on the Impact Evaluation, will present the methodology and findings from this evaluation, with an emphasis on key lessons learned about the implementation and evaluation of school-based mentoring programs. In addition, two previous large-scale studies of school-based mentoring will be discussed;
- Dr. Carla Herrera of Public/Private Ventures will describe the Big Brothers Big Sisters School-Based Mentoring Impact Study;
- Dr. Michael Karcher of University of Texas-San Antonio will describe the Study of Mentoring in the Learning Environment;
- A panel of experts, including Dr. David DuBois of University of Illinois-Chicago and Dr. Thomas Keller of Portland State University, will comment on the studies and will lead participants through breakout discussions on the implications of these findings for future mentoring programming and policy.
If you are running a school-based mentoring program, or if you are a school administrator thinking about starting one, this is a one-of-a-kind learning opportunity. It will provide you with valuable insights and a chance to directly engage leading researchers in the youth mentoring field.
